Nov 30, 2011: I have been working on getting some of my books on audio, and have the first one (as sort of a test case) done. It is a children's picture book so I also want to put the audio together with the pictures in a video book. Here is the audio if you are interested in hearing it:
=============================================================================================================
Oct 09, 2011: I am going to add a page to this website for my books that are published with exceptionally large print for visually impaired persons. I am still not sure which books will be on there yet, but the first one is Memoirs of a Cruiser Sailor, in 18 pt print.
===============================================================================================================
Sep 30, 2011: I finally got Word program installed in my new computer, so now I can get busy on my books again. Now if I can get my favorite photo program installed I will be back to where I was before my computer crashed.
===========================================================================================================================================
Sep 28, 2011: My old faithful computer finally died completely!! After many years of sterling service it decided not to boot up any more. So, I was forced to buy a new one with more GBs in the hard drive. It took a week to get here, so I borrowed a computer to use in the interim. Of course it did not have Word on it so I couldn't work on my books. I have my new one now and it too does not have Word on it. Damn!! I have a guy coming tomorow to install Word so I can get busy writing again.
================================================================================================================
Aug 23, 2011: I am hating my computer right now. It is FULL and I can't get it to do anything. I bought an external hard drive which I will install
tomorrow. I hope that I can get all my programs, files, documents, photos, etc., into the external hard drive and get my computer emptied out so it will work again at a decent speed.
================================================================================================================
Aug 02, 2011: This morning I had my radio interview with John Austin, host of "The Book Club" on WTAN in Florida. We talked about my books "Fortino," and "Recon Team X." Here is a link to the interview: Nov 30, 2011: I have been working on getting some of my books on audio, and have the first one (as sort of a test case) done. Jul 22, 2011: WOW! Last week I had my 73rd birthday! That is such a big number that now I am starting to feel old. My daughters had a little party for me which was fun. I am still diligently working away writing books. Some nights I stay up all night long, banging away on the computer. Then I have to sleep most of the next day to recover. I have so many books I want to write, and the ideas for more just keep coming.
================================================================================================================
Jul 15, 2011: My radio interview with John Austin of The Book Club will be on August 1st. I will put a link to it on this website for those of you that want to listen to it. I will be discussing "Fortino," and "RECON TEAM X," and perhaps "Memoirs of a Cruiser Sailor." John is a great guy, and I am really looking forward to the interview.
================================================================================================================
Jul 02, 2011: I am going to have a radio interview about my last three books sometime in August. I don't know the exact date yet, but I will post it here when I find out.
================================================================================================================
Jun 24, 2011: I have been working hard on writing, and tonight managed to figure out how to get four of my books made available on those new fangled Kindle machines. For me, being somewhat technically challenged, that is quite an accomplishment! Earlier I set a goal of publishing three new books this year, and so far have two new ones published, so it looks like I will meet my goal. I also tried to quit smoking, but that is NOT possible so far.
================================================================================================================
I have been trying to find a way to get the price of my books down so they are more affordable, and have been able to do that with some of them. However, I find it impossible to get the price of my children's picture books lowered, therefore I am going to put them here on this website in their entirety so children and their parents can enjoy them completely free of charge. The first on I have put on here is OLIVER, THE FROG THAT COULDN'T CROAK.
================================================================================================================
Mar 19, 2011: Yesterday, the 18th, someone using the name "Concern" posted an entry on my Guestbook saying that I need to be careful who is representing my brand, and that he is inexperience and rasists (sic). I have no idea what he is talking about. I have no "brand" and no one is representing me. So please, if the person that wrote that sees this, would you please send me an email and tell me what you are talking about? Thank you.
================================================================================================================
Mar 12, 2011: Well, after 52 years of smoking cigarettes, I have decided to quit!! Today is my first day without a single cigarette, and it is killing me. I sure hope this gets easier as time goes on. By the way, I am still copying that book into my computer. I think I will finish before the end of next week.
================================================================================================================
Feb 26, 2011: It has been a long time since I have posted anything here, because I have been busy copying one of my books into the computer from the printed copy. Some how the book got deleted out of my computer so I have to copy it back in again. There is nothing more boring than copying a book I have already written into the computer. I have been working on it steadily now for about three weeks and am only half way through the book. When I get it finished I have two others to copy also. I dread having to do it, but I need them in the computer again.
================================================================================================================
Feb 03, 2011: I've been very busy the last two days. I finished another book, "RECON TEAM-X," and got it sent off to my publisher so it should be available for purchase before too long. I have also been working on the next book in the "Legend" series of children's chapter books. It is "The Legend of Black Mountain." I hope to have it finished within about a week. It's about the two sisters in the series having a close encounter with Bigfoot while on a fishing trip to Northern California with their father.
================================================================================================================
Feb 01, 2011: Still have my stupid cold, and am getting very tired of it! My latest book, "FORTINO" is now available on amazon.com, so I am happy about that. Will soon have "The Legend of Willow Springs Farm" on there also. The next step is to have them available for Kindle users.
================================================================================================================
Jan 12, 2011: I have been down with a cold for over a week now, but am slowly recuperating. I am excited about a new coloring contest I am sponsoring for children ages 8 thru 13. For details go to "Kid's Coloring Contest" on this website.
================================================================================================================
Jan 04, 2011: Today I was thinking about how modern the world has become in the last twenty years. Consider this: I have a website where I sell certain things. I never actually possess or even see the things that I sell. I don't know who the buyers are, and never see them. They pay me for the things with money that I never see, yet can spend to pay my bills, buy food, or purchase things I want. All this is due to e-commerce on the internet. This could never have happened twenty years ago. Isn't modern technology great??
================================================================================================================
Jan 03, 2011: Today I learned a new word. It is "paraprosdokian." I won't tell you the definition, you can look that up in the dictionary. However, here are some examples. "I threw my mother down the stairs, a kiss." "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read." "I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car."
"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research."
===============================================================================================================
Jan 01, 2011: Happy New Year!! Here we are at the beginning of a new year and it is time to make some new year's resolutions again. I think most people break their resolutions within the first month, but here are mine anyway: I am going to quit smoking this year. I am going to lose a lot of weight this year. I am going to finish at least three books this year. I am going to move back to California this year. I am going to buy a car this year. I am going to sell at least 10,000 books this year. I am going to save a lot of money this year. If I can accomplish just two or three of these things I will be very satisfied.
================================================================================================================
Dec 24, 2010: Well tomorrow is Christmas day and I still don't understand how it got here so fast this year! Soon it will be a new year and again I will be writing the wrong date on my checks for a while. The end of the year is a good time to reflect on the past twelve months and see what one has accomplished. At my age just to make it through another year is sort of an accomplishment, but I did manage to get two more books published. This coming year I hope to do better. On a more personal note, I made some new friends here in Playas de Tijuana, and that helps make my stay here more enjoyable. Also I started collecting some of my favorite movies on DVD. One of my new friends gave me the complete series of Victory at Sea programs. What a great compilation of WWII war footage!! Well, I have to go now, but before I close I want to wish each and every one of you a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!
================================================================================================================
Dec 12, 2010: For the past few days I have been busy working on finishing up my book, "Recon Team X," so I haven't had time to post anything on this blog. I am close enough to finishing the book that I think it may be done later today. I see on the news that other parts of the country are suffering from extremely cold weather and lots of snow. Thank God I live here in the San Diego/Tijuana area. Yesterday it was sunny and the temp was about 75 degrees, and they say that today it is going to over 80 degrees! Why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
================================================================================================================
Dec 08, 2010: I have been really busy lately and haven't had time to post anything here on my blog. I'm getting ready to launch a marketing campaign for my latest book, "Fortino," and marketing is not my strong suit so I am having to learn as I go. I am posting this blog today in order to let you know about a really good artist I found here in Tijuana. His name is Alex Sanchez and he specializes in line drawings for comic books, but he is doing some illustrations for a children's book for me. You can check out his work at: http://alexcomicsesp.wordpress.com/
================================================================================================================
Nov 30, 2010: In just a few more hours it will be December. Where did the year go? It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating New Years, and now it will soon be time to do it again. For the past few days I have been working on my book "The Warlord." It is about an actual Chinese Warlord that was quite an interesting character, and it is really fun to write about him. Not too much is known of his early life so it gives me a chance to use my literary imagination to fill in the blanks in what is known about him. I estimate I can have it finished in about three months. I am still waiting for the proof copy of my latest book, "Fortino." As soon as I receive and approve it, it will be available for purchase on Amazon.com.
================================================================================================================
Nov 27, 2010: Well, Thanksgiving is over and I managed to get through the turkey, ham, prime rib, shrimp, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatos, sweet potatos, cranberry sauce, peas, corn, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and cheese cake without exploding!! I made a vow not to eat again until next year, but I have already broken my vow and eaten some of the leftovers. Such is life. I talked to my publisher today and he says my latest book "Fortino" should be available on Amazon.com by December 1st. We are trying to keep the price as reasonable as possible so it won't hurt anyone's pocketbook to purchase it. I am also going to try to make it available on Kindle for those of you that prefer e-books.
================================================================================================================
Nov 24, 2010: Happy Thanksgiving!! On this Thanksgiving day I am thankful for so many things I hardly know where to begin. First and foremost I am thankful for my children and grandchildren. I am also thankful that I am healthy and still writing every day. Also I am thankful for all our armed forces personnel who sacrifice so much in their personal lives in order to ensure our safety in this dangerous world. I hope they all have a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving day.
================================================================================================================
Nov 22, 2010: Last night I received the first rough sketches for a new children's picture book I am working on. I picked the artist because I saw examples of his work on the internet and liked them. His sketches for my book are more than good, they are excellent, superb, and any other superlative you can think of!! It is such a pleasure to work with an artist that intuitively knows what I envision as illustrations for my story. Now I am anxiously awaiting the rest of the sketches so I can get the book into print.
================================================================================================================
Nov 19, 2010: I have added a new page to my website for eBooks. My intention is to have all my books available as eBooks eventually, however as I am extremely technologically challenged it may take me quite a while to get them all formatted into pdf files and put up on the webstie. So far I have managed to get two of them on the new page.
================================================================================================================
Nov 14, 2010: Well my latest book "Fortino" is now at the printers and I am waiting for them to send me a proof copy. If the proof is okay then the book will be available for purchase. There is always a sense of relief when I am finally finished with a book and actually see it in print. I have been taking a couple days off from writing as I waited to hear from my publisher, but now it is time to start writing again. I am nearly finished with "Recon Team X" but am in no hurry to get it finished.
================================================================================================================
Nov 12, 2010: Don't have much time right now, but I wanted to share a funny Christmas song with everyone. CLICK HERE
================================================================================================================
Nov 09, 2010: Hurray!!! I finally finished all the changes and corrections to "Fortino," and sent it back to the publisher. With a little luck the book should be available with a couple weeks. Now I can concentrate on getting my next book "Recon Team X" finished. I was up until 4:30 in the morning today getting "Fortino" finalized, so I feel a little tired this afternoon. I think I will take the rest of the day off and watch some movies on TV, then hit it hard tomorrow.
================================================================================================================
Nov 08, 2010: I haven't written anything on this blog for a few days now because I was working diligently making changes and corrections to my latest book "Fortino." Today the five-day heat wave that we had here finally is over, and the weather is back to being normal for this time of year. I am looking forward to having a little cooler weather in the coming months. I recently found an artist here in Tijuana for one of my children's picture books. I wrote the book some time ago but up until now was unable to find a good artist for the illustrations. He is really a great artist and I can't wait to see his preliminary sketches for the book.
================================================================================================================
Nov 02, 2010: Today it was really hot here.. How hot was it? Well, I was walking down the street and looked down and saw a rattlesnake crawling alongside me just so he could stay in the shade of my shadow. I went to the store and bought a dozen eggs and when I got home and opened the carton I found 12 little baby chicks. I mean, I'm talking HOT!!! It is midnight right now, and it is still hot.
================================================================================================================
Nov 01, 2010: Well, I survived Halloween last night although I did see many ghosts, vampires, mummies, and zombies. Of course I also saw many princesses, fairies, butterflies, and other such creatures. Although Halloween is generally not celebrated here in Mexico, Tijuana is close enough to the U.S. that the custom of trick-or-treating is catching on here as well. I finally finished all the corrections and changes to Fortino and am now awaiting the second revised galley from my publisher. Now that I have finished that book I can get serious about working on Recon Team X. I also have it nearly finished but will have to wait until after Fortino is out in the market before I can get it published.
================================================================================================================
Oct 29, 2010: I am still working on making corrections to the galley of Fortino. I thought I would be finished by now, but a friend loaned me the complete set of "Victory at Sea," and I have been watching it instead of working on the book. There are 24 episodes of a half hour each. I remember when the program was originally on television and it was one of my favorites at the time. If I can tear myself away from WWII long enough I should have all the corrections to Fortino finished by Monday, then I can get back to work on my next book.
================================================================================================================
Oct 25m 2010: This last weekend I went up to Chula Vista to spend the weekend with my grandkids. I hadn't seen them for over a month so it was really fun to be with them again. Saturday afternoon we had a Halloween party for them and a few of their friends, and it was really fun. My youngest grandson, Leo, who is two years old surprised my when I gave him some candy and he said something like "shu shur yu yu." I asked him what that meant and one of my granddaughters told me it was "thank you grandpa" in Chinese! I don't like to brag, but how cool is that that he is beginning to learn to speak Chinese at two years old. Now that I am back home and feeling refreshed and ready to work again, I think I will be able to finish another book within two weeks or so.
================================================================================================================
Oct 20, 2010: Last night I did my "sun dance" and guess what? - It didn't rain today despite all the TV weathermen saying it was going to be a very wet day! I got the first galley of "Fortino" back from my publisher yesterday, and spent several hours going through it making the changes I think will make it a better book. This is the part of writing I really hate - having to read very carefully everything I have written. It is, however, a necessary part of the process of producing really good books. No matter how careful I am when I write a book I always find errors when I proofread it. I don't think it is me though, must be this stupid computer I have. It makes spelling mistakes sometimes.
================================================================================================================
Oct 19, 2010: Well, I never did figure out how to put a link to the CD of my radio interview, but I did manage to put a link to the radio show's website of the interview. Today it has been raining all day, which makes for a very gloomy day. You know, the kind of day that makes you feel like doing nothing but vegging out in front of the TV with a big bag of chips. It seldom rains here, and when it does I hate it. Most people dress for the weather, but I have a theory that the weather should conform to the way I dress. For that reason I have worn shorts every day for the last ten years or so. The only time I remember putting on a pair of long pants was for my daughter's wedding about five years ago. My theory about the weather usually works and we have pretty good weather here, but every once in a while the climate rebels against me and lets it rain. Later this evening I will do my "sun dance" and all should be back to normal by tomorrow.
================================================================================================================
Oct 18, 2010: Today I received the CD of my radio interview with John Austin. I am trying to figure out how to put a link to it here on my website, but find that I am somewhat technologically challenged!! Nevertheless, I will keep working on it until I can figure it out.
================================================================================================================
Oct 16, 2010: This morning I got up with every intention of working on Recon Team X, and everything was going pretty good until I made the mistake of turning on the television. The channel it was on had bullfights. Since I saw my first bullfight at the age of 19, I have been hooked on the "toros!" The first matador featured today was Eloy Calvazos, a 61 year old torero from Mexico. For those of you that don't know much about bullfighting, 61 years is pretty old for a bullfighter, but Eloy is one of the legends now of the sport. Rather than wear the traditional "traje de luces" or suit of lights that toreros usually wear, Eloy was wearing a black suite with short jacket and a wide-brimmed flat crowned sombrero. He drew a really big beautiful bull from Rancho Montecitos, and Eloy fought the bull like the master he is. I was hypnotized watching as he used his cape to draw the bull in for pass after pass, with the crown shouting, "Ole, Ole," and "Torero, Torero!" After completely dominating the bull, he killed it with skill and grace in the finest tradition of the sport. Eloy was awarded one ear and the tail, and he made his walk around the bullright holding his trophies high as the crowd threw him sombreros, pillows, and flowers.
================================================================================================================
Oct 13, 2010: It is 3:20 a.m. right now but I couldn't sleep so I got up to write for a little while. Yesterday I was working on a book when I got an email from a friend in China about a dagger. That email was the beginning of about a 3 hour exchange of emails and photos of Chinese daggers. I am working on revising my book on Chinese daggers and my friends in China are a great help when it comes to identification and translations of the inscriptions. When I had finished by first book on Chinese daggers I thought I had pretty much covered the subject pretty well. Boy, was I wrong! I now believe the number and variety of dagger designs of Chinese daggers is unlimited, and if I lived five lives I would not be able to cover the subject adequately. However, it is a challenge to try.
================================================================================================================
Oct 10, 2010: I got up early this morning to begin writing, but really felt out of sorts so I returned to the bed for a few more hours sleep. Last night I did however get a few pages of Recon Team X written. I think I may have it finished by the end of this month if I stick with it. It is really hot here today!! Not sure of the temperature, but I think it must be about 80 degrees. My printer died a while back so I have to buy another one. Maybe I'll do that today. When I shop for a printer I find the most important thing to check is the price of the ink cartridges. Most of them are really expensive, even if the printers are fairly priced. If anyone knows of a good brand of printer/copier/scanner with economical prices for the ink cartridges, please let me know via email.
================================================================================================================
Oct 9, 2010: Today is Saturday and I wasted about three hours trying to put one of my children's picture books into pdf format. I never was able to get it done. I'm not sure if my computer is stupid, or I am, but I suspect maybe it's the latter. I am really bummed out about it!
================================================================================================================
Oct 8, 2010: It is 5:30 in the morning right now. I couldn't sleep, so I got up to do some writing (and drink a cup of coffee!). Last night I talked to my publisher Derek, and he told me that he thinks he will probably have my book "Fortino" ready for my approval for printing by this Monday. For those of you that have never had a book published, it more or less works like this: Once you have your book finished you email it (or snail mail it) to the publisher. The publisher then does some text formatting, pagination, gives it a ISBN number, formats the cover, etc., and then emails you what is called a "galley proof." Once you receive the galley you have to read it over very carefully to see if there are any changes you want to make to the text. No matter how careful you were about spelling, phrasing, etc., while writing the book, you will almost always find some small changes you want to make. After emailing the publisher the changes you want made, he will send you a second "corrected" galley. If everything is okay on the second galley and you approve it, it goes to the printer. A few weeks after that you will receive your first printed and bound book. No matter how many books you have already published, it is always very exciting to see your work of months, and sometimes years, as an actual book. I think the process is similar to a woman having a baby. After nine months of gaining weight, morning sickness, feeling uncomfortable, etc., they finally give birth and at long last get to see the fruit of their labor.
================================================================================================================
Oct 6, 2010: Yesterday I spent nearly the whole day writing. I was working on "Recon Team X" and got quite a bit accomplished. This is a book I started about two years ago, but got sidetracked working on other projects and never got around to finishing. I think now that I will probably have it finished by the end of this month. It's funny how some days the writing just seems to flow easily, and other times I sit in front of the computer staring at a blank screen for hours unable to think of a thing to write. That's usually when I switch over to work on another book.
================================================================================================================
Oct 4, 2010: After I had written "The Last Mayan Warrior," my two eldest granddaughters, who were ages 7 and 10 at the time, asked me to write a book for them. I told them I would do even better than that, I would write a book with them as the main characters. That was how I started writing children's chapter books. My first one was "The Legend of Willow Springs Farm," and the girls really liked it. They asked me to write another, so I wrote "The Legend of the Lost Tiki." Those two were followed by "The Legend of Dunsmoor Manor," where the girls are visited by a ghost. I am presently working on two more chapter books in the "Legend" series: "The Legend of Black Mountain," and "The Legend of Santo's Gold." I really enjoy writing these chapter books, and will keep writing them until I run completely out of ideas.
================================================================================================================
Oct 3, 2010: This is a continuation of my previous blog. As a very young boy I remember World War II, and then later the Korean War. As soon as I could, I joined the navy and stayed in the Navy for 25 years. For most of that time I worked in Naval Intelligence, and traveled all over the world. In each country I visited I tried to pick up a little of the language and culture while I was there. It was this interest and experience in the military (Vietnam War) that led me to start writing "Recon Team X."
Another of my interests is collecting Chinese military daggers and swords. As I began to acquire quite a few Chinese daggers I tried to find some reference books on the subject and found that none existed, not even in China! That led me to write the first reference book on Chinese military daggers, and later another on Chinese Military swords. In doing the research for these books I began to learn a little about, and became interested in, Chinese history in the 20th century. If the Mexican Revolution was chaotic, the Chinese Revolution was even more so. Curiously they both began in the same year, 1910. As I learned more about the factionalism of the early Chinese armies I began to understand the phenomena of the Chinese Warlords. I am now working on a book about one of the more colorful warlords, General Zhong Zong Chang. I guess my experiences and interests are wider and more varied than many writers, hence my books fall into many difference genres. Tomorrow I will explain how I started writing Children's books.
================================================================================================================
Oct 2, 2010: It has been suggested that I write a little about what interests I have and how those interests influence my writing. In college I studied Latin American history as a large part of my History major. Many years before I had studied Spanish on my own and was pretty fluent in the language. The college I attended had many very old books in Spanish in the library, so I was able to research Mexican history as written by the early Spanish conquistadors, and other early writers on the subject. I also studied both the Mexican revolutions, the first one against the Spaniards and the later one against the government of Porfirio Diaz. Every revolution produces chaos, as well as heroes and cowards. But they also have devastating results on the common man. So far I have written two books about Mexico. The first one was "The Last Mayan Warrior," which was based on the life story of a Mexican boy that was kidnapped by the Mayans during the caste war and became one of their greatest war chiefs and generals. The second one is "Fortino," and it is based on the life story of a Mexican boy whose life was changed completely by the Mexican Revolution. I would like to make it clear that both these books are fiction, even though they are based on real people. As my interest and fascination with Mexican history has not diminished in the slightest, I will probably write more books about Mexico and its people.

Andrea wrote: Hi Jan, Well I read all 5 books and enjoyed all of them, the kid's books are great, but I really enjoyed " The Last Mayan Warrior ", you got a lot of story and information in it, and actually peaked my curiosity to look at some more on the Mayan's, thank's for the books, will be watching for more. ================================================================================================================
Sept 30,2010: Tomorrow is the 1st of October and before you know it Halloween will be upon us. I strongly suggest that if you have any little ones in your life, either children or grandchildren, that you buy them a copy of "Wilber, The Littlest Pumpkin." It is about a very little pumpkin that wants with all his heart to be a Jack-O-Lantern on Halloween. Besides being an interesting story with wonderful illustrations, it teaches an important lesson to the kids. It can be found on the "Children's Picture Books" page of this website.

Andrea wrote: Hi Jan, I read Willow Springs and found it quite intertaining, you do have some twists don't you. I also read Like Father, and was really surprised at the plot turns, what an unusual story, enjoyed them both, am still waiting from the publisher for the other three, hope your well and writing (:

Sept 28, 2010: Yesterday was the hottest day of the year for Southern California and Northern Mexico. In Los Angeles the temperature reached 113 degrees!! It was not quite that hot here, but it was too hot to get much writing done. I did manage to get about two pages writen though. This morning I heard an author on a television show say something about writing that I thought was really good. She said, "Fiction is just plagerism from life." She was talking about basing fictional characters in her book on people she knew in real life. I do the same thing.

Sept 26, 2010 Today I have to get busy on "Recon Team X". I started to write this book over a year ago but got sidetracked and didn't finish it. I have a weird writing schedule. I usually work on anywhere from 3 to 7 books at the same time. I work on one until I get stuck (temporary writer's block?), and then switch over to work on one of the others. Sometimes the ideas just don't come, so I take a break for a day or two to try to come up with fresh ideas or a better way to phrase an idea.
It's a super hot day here in Tijuana so I decided not to write today after all. I have been playing a game where you have to try to trap a cat before he can escape. It is DIFFICULT! If you want to give it a try, here is a link to the game: http://www.members.shaw.ca/gf3/circle-the-cat.html

Sept 25, 2010 I have been working hard trying to make this website more reader friendly, and think I have done a fair job, but would like to make it even better. If any of you have any ideas on how I can improve this website, please send me an email and let me know. I will also post any and all reader's comments right here on this blog.
